Research Tool

Welcome to the research benchmarking tool. The research tool examines the amount of sustainability related topics or themes that are present in research efforts at a university. This consists of published articles and authors, as well as what efforts are made to increase sustainability knowledge.

The tool is split into two sections, formal and informal. Formal consists of the research that is being performed. These questions are answered with percentages. Informal consists of questions that are important to increase the amount of sustainability related research being done. They are mainly answered with yes or no responses.

Formal Research

The formal research tool examines research being completed and research that has been published. The questions in the formal research tool are answered with percentages. The formal research tool also makes use of the Research analyzer software which searches an institution’s research database for publications related to sustainability. Results from the formal research tool will give data showing how much focus is put on sustainability related research at the higher education institution.

The tool is run on a json file of consisting of research articles titles, abstracts, and creators for all published research at the university.

Insert research database file (.json):

R1

Percentage of grant or contract funded SDG-related research, relative to the total number of grant or contract funded research at the institution.

R2

Percentage of published research articles with a focus on SDG themes, relative to the total number of research publications in all areas

Does the institution have an ongoing program to encourage students to conduct research on SDG topics?

R7

Does the institution have a program to encourage academic staff to conduct research on SDG topics?

R8

Research

R1

Question:
Percentage of modules that include SDG-related topics or themes, relative to the total number of modules offered at the institution.

How to answer:
This question can be answered by contacting the research coordinator of an institution. This may require some dialogue to fully explain the question and what sustainability related means since you will most likely not be allowed to see the grants and funding for research. The Final answer should be a percentage of total sustainability research being funded out of total funded research. Looking for amount of research/amount of research.

Description of what this question is hoping to gather:
This question looks at the funded research at the institution which is an important part of the research because funding allows the potential for research to have a greater impact.

R2

Question:
Percentage of published research articles with a focus on sustainability-related issues, relative to the total number of research publications in all areas, as a percentage.

How to answer:
For this question to be answered, the published research articles at your university should be placed in a .JSON file consisting of at the minimum, the titles and abstracts of each article. This can either be downloaded off of your research and publications database or by contacting your research department. Then the software can be run on the file.

Description of what this question is hoping to gather:
Using sustainability keywords, this question scans titles and abstracts for the amount of sustainability related research publications.

R3

Question:
Percentage of the institution’s academic staff that are currently engaged in sustainability research, relative to the total amount of academic staff who conduct research, as a percentage.

How to answer:
This question is answered using the same file gathered for the previous question.

Description of what this question is hoping to gather:
This question gathers the percentage of faculty that conduct sustainability-related research.

R4

Question:
Percentage of academic departments that include at least one academic staff member that conducts sustainability research compared to other areas of research, relative to the total number of academic departments, as a percentage.

How to answer:
This question is answered using the same file gathered for the two previous questions. The software outputs a list of the faculty that had published a sustainability-related article in the last year. This list should be cross checked with a list of faculty in each department. If at least one author from the sustainability list is included in the faculty for the department then that department has a staff member. A percentage should be calculated of the those departments found out of the total number of departments.

Description of what this question is hoping to gather:
Hopefully, every department has at least one staff member that is conducting sustainability research. Sustainability is an overarching idea that can be contributed to by many different disciplines. Every department can contribute to sustainability in their own way.

R5

Question:
Does the institution have one or more research centres or groups on campus focusing on sustainability-related research or services?

How to answer:
Research Centres and Groups are a collection of researchers that focus their efforts in one particular area or field. They are considered sustainability-related if their research directly relates to one of the Sustainable Development Goals. The keywords we have provided can be used if the topic can not be immediately decided as sustainability-related. The head of your sustainability may be able to answer this question with or without the help of the university’s website. If not, then the head of the research department at your university can be contacted.

Description of what this question is hoping to gather:
It is important for students and faculty who are interested in involving themselves in sustainability research are assisted in doing so. This question looks to see if there are services at the institution with the purpose of assisting with this.

R6

Question:
Does the institution have an ongoing program to encourage students in multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct research in sustainability?

How to answer:
The head of your sustainability should answer this question. If not, then the head of the research department at your university may be able.

Description of what this question is hoping to gather:
Student involvement in research is important. Students can also provide a lot of help to researchers while learning more about sustainability.

R7

Question:
Does the institution have a program to encourage academic staff from multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct research in sustainability topics? (To count, the program must provide faculty with incentives to research sustainability and specifically aim to increase faculty sustainability research)

How to answer:
The head of your sustainability should answer this question. If not, then the head of the research department at your university may be able.

Description of what this question is hoping to gather:
It is important for researchers from all types of disciplines to conduct sustainability research. This question gathers whether the institution provides incentives for conducting this research as a way of showing its commitment to institution-wide sustainability.

R8

Question:
Does the institution have ongoing library support for sustainability research and learning in the form of research guides, materials selection policies and practices, curriculum development efforts, sustainability literacy promotion, and/or e-learning objects focused on sustainability?

How to answer:
Contact your library and ask whether they have guides that focus on SDG-related topics. SDG related topics are those that fit into one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Keywords related to the SDGs can be found on the keywords tab and the SDGs are linked to above.

Description of what this question is hoping to gather:
SDG-related resources show that the university is interested in informing their students about sustainability. Sustainability resources allow students who are interested in sustainability projects or research to have access to the information they need for their work.

R9

Question:
Does the institution provide financial incentives to support open access publishing, e.g., a publishing fund to support faculty members with article processing and other open access publication charges?

How to answer:
The head of your research department should be able to answer this question

Description of what this question is hoping to gather:
Open access publishing allows greater numbers of people to access research. Learning about sustainability through specific research interests would expand sustainability research into the world.
